• Citizenship/Residency: Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
• Residence: Both you and the child must live in South Africa.
• Income: Your combined household income (including any spouse or partner) must be below the income threshold set by SASSA. The limits are:
  • Single Applicant: R52,800 per year (R4,400 per month).
  • Married Couple: R105,600 per year (R8,800 per month).

2. Gather Your Documents:

Essential Documents (Everyone Needs These):

1. Your South African ID: A valid, barcoded 13-digit South African ID book or card.
2. Child’s Birth Certificate: The child’s unabridged (full) birth certificate. This includes details of both parents.

3. Create a SASSA Online Account:

• Visit the Website: Go to the SASSA services portal: https://services.sassa.gov.za
• Click “Register”: Follow the instructions to create an account. You’ll need an email address and phone number.

4. Log In and Apply:

• Log in to your newly created SASSA account.
• Choose “Child Support Grant”: Select this option from the list of available grants.
• Complete the Form: Carefully fill out all the required information. Double-check for accuracy.
• Upload Documents: Scan or take clear photos of all your documents and upload them as instructed.

5. Submit and Wait:

• Submit Application: Once everything is filled out and uploaded, submit your application.
• Get a Reference Number: You’ll receive a reference number to track your application status.
• SASSA Review: SASSA will review your application. This may take some time.

6. Outcome and Payment:

• Approval: If approved, you’ll receive a notification and details on how the grant will be paid (usually into a bank account or through a SASSA card).
• Rejection: If rejected, you’ll be informed of the reasons and have the option to appeal.
