Job Description

The University of the Witwatersrand is seeking a Director for the Centre for Learning on Evaluation and Results Anglophone Africa (CLEAR-AA), a grant- and donor-funded centre under the Wits School of Governance. The role involves leading academic, research, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) programs, managing stakeholder relationships, and ensuring the centre’s sustainability and global reputation.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (Doctorate degree preferable)
  • 10 years of relevant experience in monitoring and evaluation, design and implementation of monitoring systems, or large-scale evaluations
  • Disciplinary background as an economist, political scientist, development or governance specialist, health specialist, or related field
  • Demonstrated track record in building strong international stakeholder networks
  • Experience in fundraising for complex multi-country projects
  • Ability to attract and secure country projects
  • Strong project management experience
  • Experience or transferable skills in training, teaching, and/or postgraduate supervision
  • Excellent academic track record in research
  • Involvement in academic research and policy advice
  • Interest in developing and facilitating formal academic programs and short courses in monitoring and evaluation
  • Demonstrated track record in leading and managing teams
  • Ability to motivate staff to perform effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (fluency in spoken and written English)
  • Willingness to travel frequently both locally and internationally when required

Responsibilities

  • Develop a sustainable business model and strategy for the CLEAR-AA Centre
  • Develop and maintain relationships with international stakeholders and communities
  • Manage clients and raise funds to sustain the work of the Centre
  • Engage with decision-makers across African governments, universities, private sectors, NGOs, INGOs, multilateral organizations, and the international community
  • Manage the implementation of the CLEAR-AA academic and research program
  • Provide academic leadership and support for teaching and research within the Wits School of Governance
  • Develop and maintain high-functioning networks and partnerships across the African continent and globally
  • Collaborate with the World Bank, multilateral organizations, governments, universities, think tanks, and other CLEAR centres
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality technical advisory services, world-class research, and knowledge generation
  • Provide professional program management and M&E capacity development/training
  • Ensure the Centre’s reputation as a recognizable African brand of global M&E excellence
