Job Description

The University of the Witwatersrand is seeking a Head of School for the School of Literature, Languages & Media. The role involves providing academic and strategic leadership, managing teaching and research programs, and enhancing the School’s international partnerships and academic profile.

Requirements

  • PhD in a discipline related to literature, languages, or media
  • Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor
  • Strong record of teaching and research in literature, language, or media disciplines
  • Demonstrable track record of academic and strategic leadership within a university
  • Hands-on management experience within a university
  • Proven record of effective financial and human resources management
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Evidence of ability to maintain and extend the School’s international partnerships
  • Ability to enhance the School’s engagements with the rest of Africa
  • Commitment to teaching and research in their discipline

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic and research leadership to position the School appropriately in local, national, regional, and global contexts
  • Articulate a clear vision and set the direction of the School within the Faculty and University’s mission
  • Lead and manage the School to meet its strategic goals
  • Maintain and extend the School’s international partnerships
  • Enhance the School’s academic and research profile through engagements with the rest of Africa
  • Continue teaching courses at an appropriate level
  • Conduct research and supervise postgraduate students
  • Manage financial and human resources effectively
  • Collaborate with departments and research entities to achieve academic excellence
