Job Description

uMhlathuze Local Municipality is hiring 9 Casual Lifeguards for Sports and Recreation (Swimming Pools). The positions involve ensuring public safety, providing lifesaving assistance, maintaining pool sanitation, and supervising recreational activities.

Requirements

• Grade 12 or relevant qualification
• High level of First Aid competency
• Essential lifesaving certificate
• Valid Lifeguard Award or equivalent with current annual retest
• Strong emotional resilience and ability to handle difficult situations
• Effective communication with colleagues and clients
• Ability to identify risks in alternative courses of action
• Knowledge of policies and regulations governing lifeguarding
• Ability to assess emergency situations and call for support
• Ability to maintain control over individuals transgressing bylaws
• Attention to detail
• Ability to pass Council’s skill and fitness test
• Ability to work weekends and public holidays without overtime
• Knowledge of swimming pool filtration and water chemistry
• Ability to supervise public and staff

Responsibilities

• Perform safety procedures, rescues, and first aid duties
• Respond to emergency calls/signals promptly and effectively
• Contact ambulance services or paramedics in serious injuries or near drownings
• Operate the public address system
• Conduct educational programs with groups of children
• Monitor pool sanitation by taking and analyzing water samples
• Perform pool maintenance to meet sanitation standards
• Supervise the public and staff at swimming facilities
