Job Description
David Brown Santasalo South Africa is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to assist with assessment, inspection, and repair of gear units, as well as general engineering duties related to gear manufacturing and repairs. The role involves collaboration with multiple departments and requires technical, communication, and problem-solving skills within a team and independent setting.
Requirements
- BEng or BTech in Mechanical Engineering (essential)
- Basic understanding of heavy machinery
- Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes
- Computer literacy including 3D CAD (Solid Edge preferred) and Microsoft Office
- Valid driver’s licence and passport with willingness to travel locally and internationally
- Practical problem-solving skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in ERP systems (advantageous)
- Take extreme ownership of work and be self-reliant
- Self-motivated with good interpersonal skills
- Production schedule driven
- Innovative and reliable
- Strong customer focus and ability to work under pressure

Responsibilities
- Independently conduct aftermarket assessments on David Brown Santasalo and foreign gear units
- Document current condition of stripped units with initial repair scope for Engineering sign-off
- Ensure all components are ready for inspection for Engineering sign-off
- Coordinate with internal departments to complete assessment sections
- Perform measurements on aftermarket gear units for assessment
- Liaise with suppliers for repair quotations
- Communicate with customers on and off site as required
- Collaborate with sales representatives on scope of work
- Work with Quality department for MPI and fitters for stripping units
- Follow up with relevant departments to prevent delays in assessments
- Manage all necessary filing related to day-to-day work
- Conduct failure investigations and assist with off-site open tender inspections
- Manage breakdowns and coordinate repair scopes with fitters
- Perform general engineering administration
- Work effectively both independently and as part of the engineering team
- Ensure accurate information supply due to nature of business
- Liaise with global DBGS engineering offices when required
- Assist with costing enquiries and compiling proposal packs as needed
- Complete any reasonable tasks instructed by manager or team leader
