SASSA Old Age Grant Requirements

The SASSA Old Age Grant, also known as the Older Persons Grant, provides financial support to South African citizens in their golden years.

It’s a crucial safety net for many, helping them meet their basic needs. But who exactly qualifies for this grant?

Here are the Eligibility Requirements for the SASSA Older Persons Grant:

1. Age: You must be 60 years or older to apply.

2. Citizenship/Residency: You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee residing in South Africa.

3. Income and Assets: You must undergo a means test. This assesses your income and assets to ensure you meet the financial need criteria for the grant.

Here’s what the means test considers:

  • Income: Your total income from all sources, including pensions, investments, and rental income, should not exceed the income threshold. These thresholds are adjusted annually, so it’s best to check with SASSA for the latest figures. As of April 2023, the single income threshold is R86,280 per year, and the combined income threshold for married couples is R172,560 per year.
  • Assets: The total value of your assets, such as your home, car, and other belongings, should not exceed the asset threshold. Again, these thresholds are subject to change, so it’s crucial to confirm the latest figures with SASSA. As of April 2023, the single asset threshold is R1,227,600, and the combined asset threshold for married couples is R2,455,200.

4. State Institutions: You cannot be receiving full-time care in a state institution, such as an old age home or rehabilitation centre, to be eligible for the grant.

5. Other Social Grants: You cannot be receiving any other social grants specifically meant for yourself, such as the Disability Grant or Child Support Grant.

6. Identification: You will need a valid South African ID with a 13-digit bar code to apply.

7. Application Process: You can apply for the SASSA Old Age Grant at your nearest SASSA office or through their online portal.

They will guide you through the application process and provide further assistance if needed.

Additional Important Points:

The SASSA Old Age Grant is paid monthly, and the amount is also subject to annual adjustments. As of April 2023, the grant amount is R2,090 per month.

If you have any questions or require clarification on the eligibility criteria or application process, you can contact SASSA directly.

  1. I think that in terms of giving young girls the child support grant ,they need to provide the name of the Father if the child/children and this must be taken to court to get the responsible party involved to Take charge of their Own Actions.
Thereby this will not fall in the hands of the government and these are the person’s the government need to find works for.

    Thank you .
