How to Do Sim Swap on Vodacom

A SIM swap allows you to transfer your old mobile number onto a new SIM card.

This can be necessary if your SIM card is damaged, lost, or if you're upgrading to a newer model of SIM card (e.g., from 3G to 4G or 5G).

Vodacom offers two types of SIM swaps: one for prepaid customers and one for contract customers.

Important Things to Know Before You Start:

  1. SIM Swap Timeframe: The SIM swap will typically be processed immediately. However, it may take up to 3 hours for the new SIM card to be activated.
  2. SIM Card Requirements: You will need to purchase a new SIM card to complete the swap. Ensure it is compatible with your device and the Vodacom network (e.g., 4G or 5G enabled, if necessary).
  3. Number Retention: During the swap, your previous number is retained on the new SIM card, so you won't lose your contacts or data associated with the number.
  4. Important Documents: For security and verification, you may be asked to provide identification, especially if you are a contract customer.

Step-by-Step Guide for Prepaid Customers

Step 1: Purchase a New SIM Card

Head to a nearby retail store that sells Vodacom SIM cards.

You can buy a new SIM card from any authorized retailer or store.

Make sure the new SIM is compatible with your phone (check for 3G/4G/5G support).

Step 2: Insert the New SIM Card

Once you have the new SIM card, insert it into your phone.

Make sure your phone is powered off before inserting the SIM.

Step 3: Dial *136# to Start the SIM Swap Process

Turn on your phone, and dial *136# from the new SIM card.

This will trigger the SIM swap process.

You'll be prompted to choose an option.

Step 4: Select "Use Your Previous Number"

Follow the prompts, and select the option to use your previous cellphone number.

This is necessary to retain your current number on the new SIM card.

Step 5: Contact Vodacom Customer Care

After you select the option to retain your old number, you will be transferred automatically to Vodacom Customer Care.

A customer care agent will guide you through the process of verifying your identity and completing the swap.

Step 6: Wait for the Swap to Be Processed

Once you've verified your details, the SIM swap will be processed.

The entire process is typically instant, but it can take up to 3 hours for the new SIM card to become active.

You will be notified once the activation is complete.

Step 7: Confirm the Activation

After waiting for the required amount of time, try calling or sending a text message to check if the new SIM card is active.

If it's not working after 3 hours, contact Vodacom customer support for assistance.

Step-by-Step Guide for Contract Customers

Step 1: Purchase a New SIM Card

Go to your nearest Vodacom store.

Unlike prepaid customers, contract customers must purchase the new SIM card from an official Vodacom store rather than a retailer.

Step 2: Visit the Vodacom Store

Visit the store with a valid form of identification (such as an ID card or passport).

You will need this to verify your details before the SIM swap process begins.

Step 3: Meet with a Consultant

Upon arrival at the store, you will be assisted by an in-store consultant.

The consultant will guide you through the SIM swap process.

They will check your account details, verify your identification, and proceed with the swap.

Step 4: Complete the SIM Swap

Once everything is verified, the consultant will complete the SIM swap for you.

They will activate the new SIM card, ensuring that your previous number is transferred correctly.

Step 5: Wait for Activation

Similar to the prepaid process, the SIM swap will be processed instantly, but it may take up to 3 hours for full activation.

Be patient, as activation may take a little while.

Step 6: Check the New SIM Card

Once 3 hours have passed, you can test the new SIM by calling or sending a text.

If it is not working, contact Vodacom customer care for further assistance.
